Melina Sedó & Detlef Engel – International Argentine Tango Teachers

For 25 years, we have been developing and sharing a distinctive approach to Argentine tango across Europe and the United States.
Our work is rooted in social tango: in embrace, musicality and improvisation.
Rather than focusing on sequences, we teach the underlying structures of the dance, allowing for clarity, depth and individual expression.

Our work

We are internationally active tango teachers, working in festivals, workshops and long-term training formats.
In 2013, we began training teachers. The graduates are teaching, djing and organising events all over Europe and even in the USA.
In 2015, we created an instructional Book & Film, which has since become a reference for dancers and teachers seeking a deeper understanding of tango.
While our work is internationally recognised, we remain social dancers at heart. We participate actively in milongas – locally and internationally – sharing the dance floor as part of the learning process.
As part of the early development of the Encuentro Milonguero movement, we have contributed to shaping its culture. Together with our friends from Tangokombinat, we organise events dedicated to close-embrace tango.

Teaching approach

Our teaching is based on clarity, structure and direct experience.
We work consistently with both roles, encouraging dancers to explore leading and following as complementary aspects of the same dialogue.
Melina dances both roles and also teaches with female partners who have emerged from our teacher training programmes.
Our approach is not static – we continue to learn and refine our work, as tango itself is a constantly evolving practice.

Philosophy

The embrace

The embrace is central.
It can be soft or intense, but it should always be comfortable and sustainable.
We teach movements that preserve the integrity of the embrace.
While our concepts function at different distances, we encourage dancers to explore the richness of a close embrace.

Improvisation

Tango is a language.
We teach its fundamental elements and structures so that dancers can develop their own expression.
Rather than relying on fixed sequences, we focus on principles that allow for variation, adaptability and presence in the moment.

Music

The music is the source of the dance.
Tango is deeply connected to its traditional music, which shapes its character and emotional depth.
Our teaching aims to cultivate a close and sensitive relationship to the music.

Organic movement

Quality of movement emerges from a natural use of the body.
We work with balance, walking, and communication within the couple, allowing technique to support – rather than dominate – the dance.
Harmony and elegance arise from clarity and ease.

Social dancing

Tango is a social practice.
It can be learned and enjoyed regardless of age or prior experience.
We emphasise respect, awareness and shared space on the dance floor.

Individual development

We prefer working in smaller groups, allowing for focused and individual guidance.
Our aim is not to impose a style, but to support each dancer in developing their own path within the structure of the dance.

Open roles

We see tango as a dialogue independent of gender.
Every dancer can develop both leading and following skills.
Working with both roles deepens understanding, expands perception and strengthens communication within the couple.
